A group of newspapers, including the New York Times and the New York Daily News, on Thursday filed a motion with the federal court in Manhattan seeking sanctions against OpenAI in their ongoing copyright dispute. The media group alleges in the litigation that OpenAI made false statements to the court regarding its ability to search its systems for evidence related to the alleged misuse of millions of their articles in AI training.
In their court filing, the media plaintiffs contend that OpenAI falsely represented that it could not search its large language models for copyrighted material, while concealing the fact that it had in fact conducted such searches well before the first group of news plaintiffs filed suit. The group further asserts that OpenAI deliberately withheld this information from the court.
The media group is asking the court to impose sanctions against OpenAI for its alleged misconduct in misleading the court.
