Teradyne Sues JAKA Robotics at the Unified Patent Court

On August 24, 2026, Teradyne Robotics, a leading global collaborative robot company, filed a patent infringement lawsuit with the Copenhagen Local Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC), accusing the German subsidiary of Chinese collaborative robot manufacturer JAKA Robotics of infringing, through multiple collaborative robot products it sells in the EU market, unitary patents held by Teradyne relating to hardware and software. This case is another representative intellectual property case at the UPC involving Chinese high-end equipment going global. The effect of the judgment may extend to all UPC participating member states. The case is currently pending, and no preliminary injunction or substantive judgment has yet been issued.

The plaintiff in this action is Teradyne Robotics A/S, a Danish subsidiary of Teradyne, and the defendant is the German operating subsidiary established by JAKA Robotics, which is responsible for JAKA Robotics’ product sales and market operations in the EU region. Teradyne alleges that multiple collaborative robot products launched by JAKA in the EU fall within the scope of protection of several of its unitary patents. The patents at issue are divided into two main categories: first, patents relating to body hardware such as robot joints, transmission structures, and safety mechanical structures; second, software method patents for algorithms such as robot motion control, force control, and safety interaction.

Teradyne stated publicly that the purpose of this lawsuit is to stop what it considers illegal copying of hardware and software technology, protect its intellectual property, and ensure the compliance of end customers’ products. In terms of the relief sought, the primary goal of this case is to obtain injunctive relief to stop the sale of the accused products within the EU; monetary damages are not the main objective of this lawsuit. As of now, the complete asserted patent numbers and the list of accused products have not yet been fully disclosed to the public.
