IP tribunal starts in FTZ
An intellectual property tribunal was inaugurated on April 9 in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, administrated by the court of Pudong New Area. The supreme court unveiled its IP judicial protection liaison office in the new area on the same day. Zhang Bin, director of the court of Pudong New Area, said the IP tribunal will help improve the business environment in the area by offering professional and centralized IP trials. It will also seek innovative IP management systems.

Province leads in patent grants
Jiangsu province led China in the numbers of patent applications and grants in 2014, according to a joint press conference by the IP authorities of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai last week. Organizations and individuals in Jiangsu filed more than 420,000 patent applications last year and were granted more than 200,000 patents, with 146,660 applications for invention patents, growing 22-fold from 10 years earlier. The province now has more than 80,000 valid invention patents.

Thirty-seven companies won prizes in the first Xinjiang patent awards. Seven patents shared first prize, along with 10 second prizes and 20 third prizes. The patents cover a wide range of industries, including new energy, new materials and photovoltaic equipment manufacturing. The number of annual patent applications in the autonomous region increased to more than 10,000 last year from 36 in 1985 when the patent law took effect.

Copyright society wins compensation
A local court ruled that Xiamen Radio and TV Group must pay 20,000 yuan ($3,220) compensation for illegally broadcasting two songs to which the Music Copyright Society of China has the copyright. The copyright society said it tried to negotiate with the defendant about the dispute, but failed. Since April 2014, the music copyright society has sent notices to 16 radio and TV stations nationwide claiming they violated its music copyrights.

China Telecom was the top Chinese company last year in the number of software copyright registrations, followed by China Electric Power Research Institute and PetroChina, according to a recent report by the Copyright Protection Center of China. China Telecom had 526 registrations in 2014, while the top 100 companies combined had 6,467. The report found that most registrations are based in locations with advanced software industries, such as Beijing and Guangdong.

Jordan appeal goes to court
Beijing High People's Court on Monday heard an appeal basketball superstar Michael Jordan filed against the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board. The plaintiff in 2012 demanded the board repeal several trademarks including "Qiaodan", the Chinese translation of Jordan, registered by the Qiaodan Sports Co, as he thought the trademarks went against the honesty and credibility principle in the law against unfair competition and could mislead consumers. Previously, the board upheld registration of the trademarks.

The IP authority in the Guangxi autonomous region recently released a list of a second batch of 37 companies with huge potential in IP, taking the total number to 73. The project is part of the local government's efforts to nurture a group of companies with IP advantages, strong innovation capacities and market competitiveness. Companies on the list can apply to become IP demonstration companies after two years, and will enjoy more preferential policies and financial support if they succeed.
